Tibet intangible cultural heritage can be protected well owing to Tibetans' selfless dedication about Tibetan traditions and culture. Champa Chilai, former director of TAR Tibetan Hospital, chairman of TAR Association for Science and Technology autonomous and master of Tibetan medicine, made great contributions to protect Tibet intangible cultural heritage.
Born in 1928, Champa Chilai started to study at the Potala Palace cultural school when he was five. He is familiar with Tibetan medicine, astronomical calendar, linguistics and "Four Medical Codes". Then he received his doctorate in 1953 after 11 years study in Moinzekang.
In 1974, Lhasa Health Care School started to enroll students. Champa Chilai was responsible to compile 11 medical textbooks including basic knowledge about Tibetan medicine, physiological surgery, otolaryngology, gynecology, pediatrics, pharmacy, etc.
"Four Medical Codes" written with ancient simple song verse had been portrayed by 80 Tibetan medicine teaching wall charts. In 1988, Champa Chilai made comments for every piece of wall charts in order to let students understand the contents well. In 1999, he edited "Mamta Light of blue glass" with 250,000 characters. In 2006, 80-year-old Champa Chilai with something wrong with his eyes reedited "80 wall charts of Mamta Light of blue glass" with 4.1 million characters, which is viewed as the most substantial interpretation book for "Four Medical Code".
Moreover, he also made great contributions to daily weather forecast by using his Tibetan astronomical calendar knowledge. In 1998, he published "Tibetan astronomical calendar collections".
Nowadays, Champa Chilai is still working on clinical research of Tibetan medicine devoting for the protection of Tibet intangible cultural heritage.
