Prize set to promote Tibetology research

The 1st Qomolangma Prize on Tibetology research was awarded on the celebration of the 20th anniversary of China Tibetology Research Center's establishment May 20.

"Tibetan-Chinese Dictionary (Zang Han Da Ci Dian)" recording the most words with detailed explanation, and "The Comprehensive History of Tibet (Xi Zang Jian Ming Tong Shi)" praised as the first Tibetan book on the full general history of Tibet among Tibetology academe, were awarded with Special Prize.

Over 68 items of research works covering economy, history, culture, religion, medicine and many other aspects bore the palm.

Setting up in 2005, Qomolangma Prize aims at planting fresh activists and pushing academic works. The prize marks a big progress of Tibetology research in China.

In 1823, Hungarian Csoma has come to Tibet to seek his ancestor. He was considered as the originator of Tibetology with his 8-year research on the life in Tibet.

"Tibetology is in China, "said Doctor Gele of China Tibetology Research Center, "But we started late and we are running on the road to pursue. There are still many things we should to learn."

Gele said that, barrier of language translation made the Tibetology research almost unknown to the foreign scholars.

However, Gele is sanguine to the Tibetology development in China. "In fact, we own much, like autoptical experiences, deep feeling of Tibet and abundant information." The next goal of China Tibetology Research Center is to commence the translation of Tibetology works from 2007.

"Seeking the balance between the speedy development and ethnic trait will be the concernment of Chinese Tibetology research." said Ma Lima, chief editor of China Tibetology Publishing House.
